ld Brentwood’s 2nd XV hosted Chelmsford 3rd XV this Saturday in a match that almost didn't happen due to late cancellations from both teams' original opponents. Fortunately, a fixture was salvaged, and both sides were eager to hit the pitch.
The game kicked off with OBs receiving possession, and it didn't take long for Martin O’Brien and Sam Wilkinson to exploit gaps in the defensive line. Wilkinson's advance was halted on the 5m line, but Barry O’Connor swiftly fed Danny Butler, who powered through from close range to open the scoring.
Following the restart, Butler took the ball on a dynamic run through the centre before offloading to Gary Murphy. Quick ball movement through the backs where Adam Grace dropped the ball to boot and the high quality grubber set up Liam Harvey to score in the corner, doubling OBs' lead.
Chelmsford responded with determined running and strategic kicks, gaining territory, and eventually narrowing the deficit with a try and successful conversion.
Despite Chelmsford's continued pressure, OBs turned the tide with solid defensive work. A well-executed kick chase resulted in a turnover by Darragh Harnett, and from the subsequent penalty, Captain Johnny Janes crashed over the line, emphatically grounding the ball. Full back Ryan Barker added the conversion.
Halftime Score: OBs 17 - 7 Chelmsford
In the second half, OBs introduced fresh legs, including debutants James Oswell Luis Lee Frankie Christopher Steve McFarlan and the ever-reliable Neil Hannaway. Martin O’Brien remained a formidable force in the centre, causing headaches for the opposition defence throughout the game.
As Chelmsford threatened OBs' half, Richard Clark and Freddie Christopher secured crucial turnovers, relieving the defensive pressure.
In the final 10 minutes, a well-executed line-out from Freddie saw Adam Grace navigate through the defence to score in the corner. Debutant Jack Watson made a significant impact on the wing, breaking through Chelmsford's lines and setting up Butler to extend the lead with a powerful run.
In the last play of the game, Chelmsford deservedly scored a try through their winger, bringing the final score to 27-12.
A special thanks to Chelmsford RFC for a great game and for their collaboration in making the fixture possible.
