Match Report: OBRFC 2s vs. Pegasus Palmerians

Date: October 7, 2023

Location: Ashwell's Road, Brentwood, Essex

On a stunning October day, the Old Brentwood’s Rugby Football Club's second team, known affectionately as the Super 2s, had the honour of hosting Pegasus Palmerians in a momentous and eagerly anticipated match. Johnny Janes and Barry O'Connor led the Super 2s out onto the field, marking a historic moment as the 2s had not graced the rugby field for over five years in a merit league fixture. The resurrection of this team was a testament to the relentless dedication of the individuals working behind the scenes. Adding to the charm of the day was the wide age range within the Super 2s team, spanning from 17 to 56 years of age, embodying the true spirit of rugby where age is just a number, and passion unites players of all generations.

First Half:

The match commenced with the OBs confidently receiving the kick-off, gathered by the ever-reliable George W. Armed with a well-defined game plan, the home team executed it with precision, at least during the initial stages of the first half. The first try of the match emerged from a Line Out, where the forwards formed an indomitable maul, driving towards the corner. Steve P emerged as the hero from the tangle of bodies, scoring the opening try. Unfortunately, the conversion attempt struck the post. A special mention must be made to Darragh, who executed a stunning 50/22 kick down the pitch to award us the lineout. Oliver Brooks made an impressive break, finding himself in open space with only one opponent to beat. However, his years of experience caught up with him, and an early injury forced him off the field. Fortunately, Murphy was a fitting replacement, and OBs resumed their charge.

The second try followed, although it resulted from a somewhat scrappy lineout. The forwards displayed relentless determination in recovering the ball, and once possession was secured, it swiftly traversed through the backs. Harry delivered an exceptional offload to Ralph, who found himself over the try line in the corner. Yet again, the conversion attempt met the unforgiving post. As the first half unfolded, Pegasus regrouped and capitalized on lapses in the OBs' defence, scoring there first try. The tide was turning, and OBs understood they needed to dig deep to regain their momentum.

The third try was scored by Harry. This was his first senior try for the club. Executed with a powerful run down the middle from an offload by Sam C. Unfortunately, Gracie's conversion attempt found the post once more! This is a testament to Harry’s dedication and versatility as he played out of position for this game. Joining him in the spotlight was the young talent Freddie C, who didn't take a backward step, excelling in lineout throwing and displaying a fantastic attitude on his impressive debut. As the first half unfolded, Pegasus regrouped and capitalized on lapses in the OBs' defence, scoring a try. The tide was turning, and OBs understood they needed to dig deep to regain their momentum.

The first half concluded with OBs leading 15-7 against Pegasus.

Second Half:

Pegasus, refusing to relent, capitalized on their strengths in the backs and scored another try, although they couldn't convert it.

OB's 15, Pegasus 12.

With the game hanging in the balance, some masterful changes across the pitch and a return to structured play proved pivotal. The fourth try showcased the Super 2’s teamwork and skill. A scrum at the halfway line saw George pick up from the back, carrying the ball towards the 10 before offloading to Barry. Barry's slick pass found Freddie, and the forwards continued to exhibit exceptional teamwork. Gracie seized the opportunity to send the ball wide to James Sullivan, who executed a brilliant sidestep, eluding the opposition's centre and touching down for a try. Gracie added the extra points with a successful conversion.

As the final whistle blew, the Super 2s celebrated their hard-fought victory, taking full advantage of the pitch-side horsebox where both teams enjoyed a refreshing pint.

Final Score: OBRFC 2’s - 22, Pegasus Palmerians - 15

The revival of the OBRFC 2s was a heartwarming tale, and the match was a testament to the enduring spirit of rugby. Freddie and Harry deservedly earned the Players of the Match award, and while we won't delve into Leed’s peculiar kick while running or Sully's momentary lapse while placing the ball for a try. The Super 2s are looking forward to their upcoming away fixture against Wanstead on October 21st and aiming to sustain their momentum.
