The Early Bird Catches the Worm

27th November 2022
Location - Bancroft Rugby Football Club

As the saying goes; The Early Bird Catches the Worm, and so it was as a strong Old Brentwood’s contingent arrived first for this tri-tournament.

Coach Stainesy quickly rallied the squads and set out a training pitch to get the boys and girls ready whilst the opposition were still in the car park trying to work their umbrellas.

A light warm up of some Sticky Toffee got the Sunday morning legs moving, whilst a game of “Throw the ball in the air and clap your hands as many times as possible before catching it again” became highly competitive.

We then moved onto some skills. First up some defensive line practice. Some excellent team work by the children saw them thwart an attack launched by coaches Matt and Barry. A little side step practice followed and then we were sharp and ready for our opponents.

First up was Bancroft, a well drilled and enthusiastic group. This provided a stern test but with our teams prepared, and with coach’s wise words still ringing in their ears, they showed some fabulous teamwork and skill to more than match their opponents.

There were terrific tries from Toby, fantastic feet from Finn, rapid running from Ronnie, audacious assists from Austin and top tagging from Thomas.

We then got a chance to have a water break and watch Bancroft against Chingford. We studied our next opponents in an end to end clash. Again the extra prep helped as we displayed more of the same against Chingford.

Joseff was a constant presence, Wilf showed off his twinkle toes, Verity made some fabulous runs and the positive spirit in the team made it hard for Chingford to settle.

Another round of matches followed where we continued to enjoy ourselves and show off our skills. Giacomo, Bea and Charlie seizing their moment against an opposition that couldn’t live with the OBs. The commitment never wavered and the children came off smiling and full of pride.

A warm down game of bulldog proved equally as popular as the matches, before we all headed off for pizza in the clubhouse. Then it was home (careful not to get mud on the cream car seats) for a well earned rest before we go again next week! Go Woodies.
