After a long off season and a few weeks of training, the U9s kicked off their season with an away game against Billericay.

It was a glorious morning and the team were in high spirits ahead of our first game of contact rugby. First up coaches Stainesy, Barry, Vicky and Tony got the team warmed up with some jogging and passing. We then practiced some game craft and tackle technique. All of which was carried out enthusiastically. Maybe too enthusiastically and they had to be reminded not to injure each other during tackle practice.

Warmed up and ready, and with the parents stocked up on coffee and bacon rolls, the games kicked off.

Billericay came out of the blocks fast, asking questions of our defence and our newly learned tackling skills. We immediately showed we were up to the task with some great tackling on show from Toby, Finlay and Thomas. Everyone showed great teamwork and support for each other, and what could have been a flurry of scores from Billericay was limited to a couple.

With ball in hand we showed some great running into space from Edmund, Verity and Oscar, and some deft passing and handling. We caused Billericay plenty of problems and managed to run in some tries of our own.

Just like that the first games finished. A chance to take a breather and receive some tactical advice from the coaches.

The second game saw the Acorns grow in confidence with the team putting in a committed performance. Lots more great running from Joseff, Arty, Charlie and Ronnie.

In the end it was a splendid first outing of the season capped off with massive hot dogs in the clubhouse after the game. Plenty of encouraging signs from the team and we look forward to the rest of the season.
