Horrible weather but a brilliant day!!

Match report – Southend festival 6/11/22

In some cold and wet conditions, the U10’s visited Southend rugby club full of excitement and steely determination to get stuck into the teams at the festival. We found ourselves in pool 2 coming up against Westcliff, Eton Manor, Rochford, Canvey and Romford.

Our first match came against Romford. A team full of strong, powerful runners. OB Acorns found themselves being bashed and crashed in contact but didn’t stop putting in those tackles. After some quick scores from Romford, Acorns then began to find the spaces to run into and soon started to find their way towards the opposition try line. A very enjoyable first match which settled the nerves and excitement.

In game 2 we faced Rochford. The two teams matched up very well for this fixture. After their first match the Acorns grew into the festival and started forming up their rucks much quicker and began to distribute the ball at pace. Some great try saving tackles from Jamie boosted the team’s confidence and they started to relax more and play with some freedom. It was in this match that Teddy came to life an made some great runs through the opposition defence, it was great to see!!

Game 3 was against Eton Manor. This was a hard game for the Acorns. With the quick turnaround of matches, fatigue started to show. A few simple errors began to creep into our game, but the team rallied and found some reserve energy to still cause problems for the opposition and get a few scores on the board.

Canvey came in match 4. Having played this side earlier in the year, we enjoyed coming up against this well drilled and exciting team once again. Both teams played this game brilliantly. The speed and accuracy of Canvey was matched with the Acorns tenacity in defence. The Acorns turned the ball over and ran in some great scores. Marcus found himself in contact on multiply occasions but managed to rip the ball and ran in a couple of excellent tries.

Our final game was against Westcliff. After the cold, wet and exhausting morning, this is where the team needed to show as much grit and determination as they could. EVERY player did exactly that!! Westcliff, much like Rochford, matched up with the Acorns brilliantly. It made for an excellent final game where there were scores from both sides in a free-flowing game. A mention has to go to Oliver, who found himself with the ball and powered through their defence to score a great try!

All our players were fantastic today. These were hard conditions for them to stay focused and upbeat, but they did! This team are improving week on week, well done to you all!

All in all, this was a great morning of rugby. Praise must be heaped onto Southend RFC for hosting such a brilliant event. Thank you to them from all in the Old Brentwood’s U10’s.
