Why choose OBRFC for your childs Rugby

We decided to homeschool Rosie in March 2023 after her physical and mental health had declined. Rosie was being severely bullied due to multiple medical conditions, including Autism and ADHD. As parents, there is nothing worse than seeing your child suffer and feeling powerless to help. Rosie became so withdrawn that she wouldn't leave the house, and her self-esteem was non-existent. She spent 80% of her days in bed or resting.

Meanwhile, her twin brother Alan was thriving as a member of the Old Brentwoods rugby team. Alan, considered a young carer for all the support he provides to his sister, found rugby to be a healthy outlet for his frustrations and a much-needed escape. Through the club, we learned about an upcoming girls' team looking for players.

When Rosie’s dad first suggested she join the girls' team, I immediately rejected the idea. I was concerned she wouldn't cope physically, might be bullied again, and feared it would take away from Alan's special activity. I was adamant rugby was not for her. However, I couldn't have been more wrong, and I'm grateful Alan didn't listen to me and encouraged her to try it.

After the first training session, Rosie was obsessed and has grown in confidence ever since. I underestimated her strength to overcome her difficulties and the positive impact of being part of a team like Old Brentwoods. When Rosie struggles or has a fainting episode, her teammates are there to support and encourage her. They accept Rosie for who she is and have embraced her differences with kindness and compassion.

Simon, the coach, has been brilliant in supporting Rosie. His encouragement and guidance have helped her go from strength to strength. I couldn't be more grateful to Old Brentwoods and how having the girl’s team for Rosie to be a part of, has so positively impacted us all as a family.
