Match Report

Date - 25th September 2004 Writtle Wanderers 2nd XV -v- Old Brentwoods 2nd XV
Writtle Wanderers II 25   Old Brentwoods II 42

Old Brentwoods started slowly on Saturday: the Writtle pack took the advantage and three unconverted tries were their reward. This ignited the spark for the Old Boys and some fine work from half-backs Hughes and Reeves gave centre Bache room to create havoc, breaking through the defence and using his support wisely. This lead firstly to a try from Hughes after good support work from Austin and Bristow, and then to two tries for Peace. Soon after, a characteristic break from Reeves and a slightly out of character reverse pass gifted Hughes his second try of the match. The Brentwood side were fielding a solid, experienced pack, but the front row of Tomlinson, Cavanagh and Knapp were made to work hard to hold a larger Writtle pack in the scrums after struggling early on.
The second half was even closer, with Writtle using their pack to gain ground. Writtle flanker Shields was held up over the line by full-back Peace and good defence in the rucks from Bristow, O'Connor and Davis kept them out. A breakaway run from Hughes left the defence - and his support - in his tracks and his score was converted by Reeves. In the last quarter the Old Brentwood team began to pile on the pressure, a good run from Peace saw support from Keith on the wing, who in turn found Haddock and Barnes in support. The move broke down but a tap penalty provided Cuthbert the chance to go on a bullocking run, stopping just short of the line. Scrum half Hughes was there yet again to score his fourth of the day. Writtle scored a breakaway try in the dying seconds to finish a close match which seemed more one-sided because of the accuracy of Reeves, converting all six Brentwood tries.
