Match Report

Date - 12th April 2003 Old Edwardians -v- Old Brentwoods 1st XV
Old Edwardians - 7   Old Brentwoods - 98

Old Brentwoods rounded the season off in style with a win over bottom of the table Old Edwardians. The game was played out in perfect conditions and the writing was on the wall from the off. The away side's forwards stretched the Old Ed's defence by driving a maul 30 yards up the pitch before the ball was spun out for Ian Hannaway to go over under the posts for the opening score.

Old Brentwoods secured the ball from the re-start and it was Scott Inglis who powered his way through a number of tackles before the ball was quickly recycled for Neil Tetner to finish off superbly. Old Ed's stuck doggedly to their game throughout and were particularly committed in the rucks. They were unfortunate to lose 2 players through injury midway in the first half, but by then Old Brentwoods were 5 tries up with further scores from Jon Mole, Tom Williams and skipper Neil Hannaway who all went on to secure hat-tricks.

It was the backs who scored the majority of the points, but it was the forwards who laid the groundwork for the win in the first 20 minutes. Welsh blokes Davies and Croom combined very well in the lineout, and the 2 props Raymond & Barton worked tirelessly in the set-piece and around the park. Their work was backed up by some hard graft from Mullen and Paddy Bache.

All in all, the match was played out in very good spirit, and man of the match for the victors was prop Gary Barton. The win secured 5th place in the league for the Ashwells Road team and continues the progress made at the club which must be pleasing for coaches Bryan Jones and Eugene O'Riordan.
