Coming back from a half-time deficit of 24-10 the Old Boys dug deep
and produced one of their best performances to date.
The first half had seen some excellent moves produced by the Old Boys
backs, although the pressure was not converted into points. Three
goods breaks resulted in either ball being turned over by Southend,
or the last pass being intercepted. The Old Boys pack took the game
to the Southend forwards with tries for Mickey Bristow and Billy Mullens.
Southend were able to score four well-taken tries following lapses
in the Old Boys defense, two of which were converted. Scrummaging
from the Old Boys tight five of Bob Knapp, Mickey Bristow, Dave Knapp,
Ian Inglis and Scott Inglis was excellent throughout the game, and
proved the focal point for the second half comeback.
The second half started with good interplay from the Old Boys forwards
(especially Paddy Bache and Hugh Godfrey) which ended in an excellent
converted try scored by Perry Reeves. With renewed confidence, the
Old Brentwoods took the game to Southend. Paul Jacobson and Matt Istead
combined well to release centre Ian Hannaway, who went over for a
try. After Reeves had converted, the scores were level.
A quickly worked try by the forwards saw Perry Reeves score his second
and the Old Boys take the lead. The score line remained 24-29 for
a good part of the second half with Southend defending well.
It was only when JP scored his second try of the game (from an interception),
and Billy Mullen scored another trade mark rumbling try, that the
game was truly put beyond Southend's reach. The score line truly flatters
the Old Boys as Southend put in a good performance only to fall away
towards the full time whistle.
