| From the start of this encounter, it was obvious;
this was going to be a close game. The Phyllosans using their excellent three-quarter line were able to stretch the Old Boys defense, scoring good tries down either wing in the first quarter of the game. It was only through determination and commitment from the home side, that they were able to thwart any further advances by the Phyllosans backs. Excellent defensive work, notably from Paul Jacobson, Richard Mather and Matt Istead halted the threat s of several Phyllosans attacks. Once the Old Boys forwards had settled into their normal game, it was clear this was were inroads could be made into Phyllosans territory. Excellent ball retention from the forwards especially Bob Knapp, Dave Knapp and Steve Gorrod stemmed the flow of attacks from the visiting team. The first try of the game for the home side came from Billy Mullen, who having picked up from the base of a sturdy scrum, was able to drive over for a fine try under the Phyllosan posts. With Reeves converting this, took the half time score to 7-12. A committed Martin Fletcher was forced to leave the field, soon into the second half, requiring stitches in a gashed head and some manipulation for his dislocated shoulder. After a reshuffle in the pack the Old Boys went on the offensive, fired by the loss of their teammate. Following a rolling maul involving Hugh Godfrey, Paddy Bache and John Mole, which took them 30 yards up the pitch, Mullen, was able to release fly half Perry Reeves for the first of his two excellent tries. The centre partnership of Mickey Bristow and Ian Hannaway was unable to reach its potential due to the speed of the opposition three-quarters. As a result they spent most of the afternoon tackling. The Phyllosans mid way through the second half, following a quick penalty, however breached this defense. Fortunately for the home side they were able to call on Perry Reeves to kick a successful penalty goal, soon after, to take the score to 15-17. Then came the best individual skill of the match. A solid scrum allowed Billy Mullen to pick up the ball and break the first tackle, but before going to ground he was able to off load to Perry Reeves, who carried three Phyllosan tacklers over the line with him to score under the posts. Having converted his own try Reeves took the score to 22-17. A last minute break through from the Phyllosans three-quarters, leveled the scores of a thrilling encounter, that proved that the Old Boys II XV, are able to adapt their game plan and play to their strengths, depending on the days opposition.
