| At long last, the Old Boys got their
new season under way, with a flying start against Upminster in near
perfect conditions last weekend. It was clear from the start that the Old Boys had the upper hand in almost all of the set play, winning successive lineouts and scrums. Steve Gorrod and David Knapp worked particularly well at the front of the line out, lifting Ian Hannaway (graceful in flight) to claim Bob Knapp's excellent throws. With Billy Mullen, and Paul Buchanan tidying up any scraps, it became clear as the game progressed that this was the best way, for the Old Boys to set a strong platform to release the backs division. Hugh Godfrey and Perry Reeves combined well at 9 and 10 (renewing last year's combination), and with time to spare, Reeves was able to use centers JP and Neil Hannaway to great effect. Using well-rehearsed moves, the back three-quarters carved through the Upminster defense, releasing full back Liam and winger Paul Jacobson to make great in roads in to Upminster territory. With Perry Reeves converting all but one of the tries, the Old Brentwoods soon put the game out of Upminsters reach. Robbie White had an excellent game with his full return to the Old Boys side, his fitness and game experience coming to the fore, as he seemed to be in support of everybody, playing in his favored blind side position. Scott Ingles was invaluable in the second row, having to support new forward Ian Hannaway throughout much of the scrummaging. Subs Mick Laws, and Charlie Raymond both made impacts as soon as they took to the field (once the latter figured out his own lineout calls!). It was an excellent start to the season, for the Old Boys II XV, as the travelling band of supporter's will testify. |
