On a crisp winter’s day, the Old Brentwoods notched up two home wins, against their rivals Millwall Albion. The Old Boys started brightly. Having secured ball up front, scrum half Alistair Rigden was given sufficient protection by the back row combination of Jamie Davis, Dave Cavanagh and Matt O’Connor to release the Old Boys three quarters. The now established pairing of Perry Reeves at fly half, and Ian Hannaway at inside centre (combined weight 32 stone), were able to commit Millwall’s defense and present the ball for new outside centre Liam Dunsheath. Given this room and using his pace Dunsheath was able to beat the Millwall defensive line and set up most of the home side’s tries. Although scrappy in places, the Old Boys pack dominated much of the loose play in the first half, with notable retention skills displayed by Tim Croom, Steve Gorrod and David Knapp. In Millwalls opening forays into the Old Boys half, the home side were able to turn ball over and return the attacks with interest with Hugh Godfrey playing out of position at full back clearing up well. Then came half time, with the Old Boys looking comfortable leading 19 points to nil. From the start of the second half the Old Boys II’s lost concentration, and Millwall took full advantage. The visitors racked up three tries (one converted) within ten minutes of the second half starting. These tries came from excellent lines of running from Millwall, and some poor defense from the Old Boys. After the third try was scored the home side huddled under their own posts, and took stock of what was happening. They were in serious danger of losing a game having built up a good lead. Millwall II’s proved that you cannot rest on your laurels, you must keep up pressure, or you run the risk of throwing away games. As it turned out this was the last time Millwall scored and after some excellent work by the three-quarters, wingers Ian White, with a near perfect interception, and Clive Richards were able to score tries and put the game beyond Millwalls reach. |
