Match Report

Date - 27th October 2001 Old Brentwood 1st XV -v- Bancroft
Old Brentwoods - 7  Bancroft 30

In a match played in near-perfect conditions, it was Bancroft's who proved the
more incisive finishers to overcome a determined old Brentwood's team.

The match started at a very fast tempo and it was clear it was going to be a
good open game. It was end to end to stuff with some good individual breaks from
both sides & most notably from Laws & Neil Tetner. No sooner had Old Brentwood's
tried (& failed!!) to open the scoring with a quickly taken penalty in front of
the oppo's posts, than Bancroft's had taken their chance of 3 points at the other
end.

There was a good battle going on up front, with Bancroft's probably just edging
it in the set-piece. However, the visitors kept them pinned back in their own
half, before the fly-half launched a hopeful looking kick down the field.
Bancrofts chased up as if their lives depended on it & capitalised on an awkward
bounce.

Possession was shared equally amongst the 2 teams with the Old Brentwood's
forwards beginning to settle. Both sets of backs were seemingly canceling each
other out. Then all off a sudden the Bancroft fly-half caught the away team
defence napping and scorched over. Three scoring chances to the home team: 17-0.

Old Brentwood's regrouped well at half-time and upped their game for the second
half. The back-row of Holmes, Laws & Stroud worked tirelessly to recycle the
ball & the away team began to look threatening. Holes were creeping into the
home team's defense and Tetner & Reah were taking full advantage, but it was
Laws who went over for a well-deserved try.

The Old Boys seemed right back in the game & the hard work of the tight five of
Raymond, Davies, Wormersley, Buchanan and Gooday was beginning to pay dividends.
The Blues dominated possession for that period with Laws, Holmes & Tetner
continuing to make good breaks, but the support play was lacking.

Bancroft then secured possession and again launched a hopeful kick downfield.
Another half-chance led to another try for the home team: 25-7.

Still Old Brentwood's kept plugging away, but without the support play, the
result wasn't going to be in doubt. The Old Boys soaked up a lot of pressure in
the last 10 minutes before the home team finished off the scoring with the
full-back running in for a fine try.

To sum up, it was a lesson from Bancroft's in how to capitalise on half-chances.
For that, they thoroughly deserved their 2 points.
