In freezing conditions the Old Boys put on a good running display of rugby on Saturday to beat Upminster III's convincingly. Upmister started the game kicking the ball short into the Old Boys forwards; Paddy Bash took the ball in and was able to present a good platform. Scum half Ian Hannaway, popped a quick ball to number 8 Billy Mullen, who with one of his trade mark lofted passes, released centre Neil Tetner, who ran wide for the first score, and possibly one of the quickest tries of recent times. After this early score the Old Boys confidence grew, and fly half Perry Reeves was given quick clean ball time after time, to release Paul Buchanan for a try under the posts, Gareth Boyce for a try in the corner and centre Neil Tetner to score three more times. Reeves followed these with 4 conversions to put the game beyond Upminsters grasp. Excellent scrumaging from the Old Boys tight five combination of Steve Gorrod, Jamie Davies, Bob Knapp, Ed Gooday and Paddy Bash, provided good clean ball from which the Old Boys three-quarters where able to stretch the Upminster defence. With excellent support all around the park from Jamie Keane and Jonny Davis, Upminster were unable to secure any ball and set up their own attacks. Andy 'Spiral' Born at full back swept up any deep field kicks from Upminster and returned the ball with interest every time. With Ed Gooday jumping, the Old Boys won more than their fair share of line out ball, to further upset Upminster's rhythm. A lapse in concentration from the Old Boys allowed Upminster in for a good try, after some confusion at the base of an Old Boys scrum. On this excellent run of form, the Old Boys II XV look forward to entertaining Billericay III's at home next Saturday. |
