In atrocious conditions the Old Brentwoods II XV put on a good display of running rugby, to beat the Upper Clapton Centurions. The previous weeks weather, had left the pitch under water in many places, making it heavy going under foot. The Old Boys pack, boosted by the return of Paddy Bash from long term injury, were able to secure much of the ball, to set up several attacks from the three-quarter line. Playing up hill and into the wind in the first half, fly half Perry Reeves decided to use the centres Ian Hannaway and Neil Tetner to break the Upper Clapton defences, kicking not being an option, due to the conditions. It wasn't long before Tetner made one of his trade-mark breaks up the centre of the field, and sent winger Chris Hague over for the first try of the game. As the pitch conditions worsened, Upper Clapton used the elements to pin the Old Boys back in their own 22 for long periods of the first half. Through some good handling in the backs, Upper Clapton's pressure was rewarded with a converted try. From the Kick off the Old Boys pushed Upper Clapton back up the field with some excellent running from Billy Mullen, Bob Knapp and Steve Gorrod. Excellent interplay within the forwards supplied good ball for scrum half Hugh Godfrey to again release the Old Boys backs, with Tetner finding enough space to score two more tries before the half time whistle. Playing with the elements in the second half the Old Boys were able to produce some good running rugby, with Simon Peace and Jamie Keane finishing off some good ball work with fine tries. Matt Istead, who had found the running particularly hard work in the first half, was able to chase down an overhead chip from Jamie Davis, and round off a good afternoon's work from the Old Boys. Despite the conditions the Old Brentwoods handling was superb all afternoon, with everyone getting involved, with backs and forwards combining well. The Old Boys now look forward to having the I's and the II's at home this weekend for the first time in three months, should be quiet in the bar afterwards! |
