| Old Brentwoods lost 15 - 5. | |
| The Old Brentwoods spent much of the first half in their own
22. The Thurrock pack dominated open play in the first quarter and only outstanding
defence, notably from Michael Ashby, JP and Mark Tetner kept them out of the Old Boys try
area for the opening quarter. However the experienced Thurrock pack stuck to their game
plan and were rewarded with two unconverted tries in the first half. Both coming from ball
rucked most of the way up the park. The second half saw the Old Brentwoods start well with fly-half Perry Reeves using the wind advantage to keep the ball firmly in the Thurrock half. Against the run of play the Thurrock forwards broke through to score a try. A change of tactics in the line out saw the Old Brentwoods forwards securing more ball with Ed Gooday Dave Knapp and Steve Gorrod working well as a unit. A combination of dropped ball at crucial moments and conceded penalties saw the home side only score one unconverted try in the second half when the game was there to be won. It wasnt until half way through the second half that the home side realised that spinning the ball wide and using the pace of John Mole, Simon Peace and Ian Hannaway was a better option than taking on the experienced Thurrock pack. The team that was unable to find its rhythm so far this season showed themselves in the second half of this match what they are capable of. If the Old Boys can play with the same commitment and vigour, that they showed in the closing stages of this game, from the Kick Off, then more wins will come. |
