Match Report

Date - 14th October 2000 Old Brentwoods 1st XV -v- Stanford le Hope 1st
lost 34 - 20.
Despite producing some fine passages of play either side of half-time fitness & team cohesion finally undid the Old Boys chances of victory over Stanford.

The game began with both sides finding it hard to stamp their authority on proceedings. The Stanford pack had the upper hand in the scrums but were found wanting in the lineouts with Paul Buchanan being dominant throughout the game. The Old Boys undoing was their early penalty count as slopping errors gifted the visitors 3 scores. Some determined play from Peter Womersley & Paul Clancy helped drive Brentwood back into the visitors half & it was Stanford that were made to pay for indiscretions in mid-field giving Laurie Cutmore the opportunity to reduce the deficit by 3 points.

Dominance in the scrum brought further territorial advantages for the visitors & a slip in defense as the home team were about to clear their lines let Stanford in for a try. This proved to be the turning point in the half as the Old Boys powered forward in waves of attacks notably from Billy Mullen & Jason Lee. With the Stanford defense being drawn further across the field rapid passing by Doug Cutmore &Chris Rea got the ball out to Laurie Cutmore who ghosted over for a try under the posts. The conversion brought the score to 14-10. Despite further attacks by the Old Boys the score remained unchanged at half-time.

The second-half saw the home team continue to dominate & reward came in the form of a penalty kick from the half way line by Cutmore. A penalty by Stanford moments later restored their 4 point lead. This lead was extended further with a converted try from centre field, the Old Boys dogged defense finally being breached to make the score 13-24.

This spurred the home team on again & with James Holmes & Billy Mullen among others making surging runs the opportunity came for captain Neil Hannaway to out pace his opposite man & go over in the left corner.A superb conversion from Cutmore brought the Old boys back to within 4 points but it proved to be their last success as Stanford made fitness tell & with them a further converted try & penalty the final score of 34-20 seemed harsh on the home team, but highlighted the victors superior fitness & cohesion, qualities that the Old Boys will need to find before next weeks clash with Upper Clapton.
