| Old Brentwoods won 29 - 22 | |
| The second team's first game of the season proved to be an
extremely tight game, the result of which was in doubt to the final whistle. It was clear early on in the game the tactics that each team would adopt. Shadwell, with by far the bigger side dominated the forward play and opted for the narrow channel on almost every occasion. The Old Brentwoods, with the more mobile back line, aimed to move the ball across the field as often as possible. In the first few minutes Shadwells forward pressure was rewarded with a converted try and a drop goal which gave then an early 10 - 0 lead. However OBs struck back quickly when Alex Hughes, with a trade mark weaving run, went over for a try, which he then converted. As the game went on, Shadwell continued to enjoy considerable pressure and only some heroic last ditch tackling on the line prevented them from building up a lead. However, the OBs backs made the most of their possession and scored two more tries. With five minutes to go the scores were level, when a ball which escaped from a Shadwell scrum was picked up by Mike Bristow. He flicked the ball to the OBs scrum half, who broke down field. With only the full back to beat, he got away an inside pass to Ian Waite, following up on his shoulder, who went over for the decisive score. |
