Match Report

Date - 28th October 2000 Old Brentwoods 2nd XV -v- Ravens 2
Old Brentwoods won 50 - 0
The Old Boys won the toss on Saturday and opted to play into the strong wind for the first half. The elements forced the Old Brentwoods backs to run nearly every ball, kicking not being an option, and this resulted in two tries. The first came when fly half Alex Hughes started a move from inside his own half, passed the ball down the three quarter line to the wing Gary Kelleher, who, after switching the ball back inside, looped around the centre Jean Pierre and scored a well worked try. The handling of Jonny Davis at outside centre position, in the difficult conditions, proved Ravens undoing as he passed to Simon Peace at full back who went over for the second try of the half.

At half time the Old Boys decided to keep the ball in hand as much as possible, rather than using the wind advantage, and with their new found confidence set up several tries. Ian Hannaway playing out of position at scrum half was able to commit the Ravens blind side defence and pass to Michael Ashby who went over for the first score of the second half. Handling from the base of a sturdy scrum by number 8 Billy Mullens saw overlaps appear against the Ravens defence which the Old Boys three quarters used to score several tries mid way through the second half.

The day was rounded off by Ed Gooday, who surged over for the last try, having collected the ball in a scrappy line out. This was Gooday’s first try for the club and surely will be the first of many.

Excellent scrummaging from the tight five notably by Charlie Raymond, Bob Knapp and Steve Gorrod provided clean ball with which the Old Boys found new passing confidence. This display of excellent handling skills should prove to be the basis of many more wins to come this season.
