Match Report

Date - 30th September 2000 Old Brentwoods 1st XV -v- Old Palmerians
Old Brentwoods won 49 - 5
The Old Brentwoods scored their first win in the league with this comprehensive victory over Old Palmerians. It was truly match of two halves, with a scrappy first half performance being replaced by slick handling and penetrative running in the second.

During the first half an excess of defensive kicking, and a multitude of minor infringements saw both teams giving up possession regularly. The result was that, with the exception of some early penalty kicks, neither side threatened to score for much of the half. The first score came with around 15 minutes to go with a break down the left wing. The Palmer's full back just managed to get across for the saving tackle, but Neil Hannaway, following up in close proximity was able to recover the ball and get over for a try in the far corner, which was converted by Laurie Cutmore.

Palmers scored themselves soon afterwards, when one the the many high kicks they put up was fumbled close to the Old Boys try line.

In the second half it was a very different picture. The Old Brentwoods pack reaped the benefit of a high work rate, winning a much higher percentage of the ball as their superior fitness told. What small amount of ball was won by Palmers was of poor quality, giving the Old Brentwoods backs further opportunity to put them under pressure.

In attack, the Old Brentwoods back line - particularly James Holmes and Jason Lee in the centre - ran some excellent lines of attack penetrating deep into the Palmers defence. The pressure soon told, and scores came regularly throughout the half and ensuring that the final result was a very comfortable victory.
