| A veritable mudbath. This game, which had been postponed the previous week when Northolt's pitch was declared unfit for play, would surely have been called off again if it had not been a cup match. The underfoot conditions were poor over the whole pitch, but there were areas around the half way line where drowning was a serious possibility. As a result, the game turned into a forwards battle in which, early on, Northolt were able to exploit their considerable weight advantage. Their early onslaught brought them a penalty within the first few minutes and a 3-0 lead. From then on, the only difference between the tams was the electric pace of Northolt's left wing, particularly impressive in the conditions, who twice in the first half capitalised on Old Brentwood's handling errors to score. The loss of playmaker Laurie Cutmore in the middle of the first half did not help Old Brentwood's attempts to get back on terms. They dominated possession in the second half, but were unable to breech Northolt's resolute defence. Tireless work from the pack, particularly Pete Womersley, Steve Aim and Stuart Chisolm took them close to the home side's line on many occasions, but it was not till late in the second half that the line was crossed. Overall, a tremendous effort in terrible conditions. |
