| May & Baker -v- Old Brentwoods 1st XV |
Baker's rolled over by Old Boys 32 - 7 |
| A superb second half performance from the old boys gave them a hard fought
but well earnt cup victory against a tough May & Baker side. The visitors could not have started better with Full-Back Laurie Cutmore slotting over a penalty in the first minute. After some more positive play from the old boys the home team slowly forced their way back into the game & found themselves camped on the visitors line for long periods of play. Some fine defensive work from all & notably by Paul Buchanan & Peter Womersley denied May & Baker any chance of scoring. Following a series of surging runs from out of defence & a well won lineout by Billy Mullen the visitors claimed their first try through a strong run from James Holmes. Further pressure gave Cutmore another opportunity to extend the lead soon afterwards. He duly obliged & the old Boys went in at half-time 11-0 up. Throughout the first half the Old Boys forwards had to contest against a very strong May & Baker pack who were both dominant in the scrums & more versatile in the lineouts. As the game progressed however the visitors fitness began to tell & with more success in set & open play they were able to provide more ball for the backs. Three further tries were converted by Laurie Cutmore giving the Old Boys a 32-0 lead with 20 minutes to go. The home team to their credit never gave up & were rewarded for their hard efforts with a consolation try & conversion late on following a lapse in concentration in the Old Boys defence. However it made no difference to the result & it was the Old Boys that came through their first contest of the year with much to be proud of & a good start to what is going to be a long, tough season. |
