The Old Boys battled well before losing out Despite missing over half of their regular first team players on Saturday, the Old Boys produced a magnificent performance to push East London for the entire game. The match started well for East London and they made the most of some good support play and slick passing to create an early opening for their tight head prop to score in the left corner. Instant responce With the conversion going over, the home team were 7-0 up after only five minutes. The Old Boy's response was instant as they quickly produced some of their best play of the season both in terms of defence and attack With good scrummaging the Old Boys were able to set up good ball, number eight Billy Mullen making many forceful runs and with good support play from Peter Womersley, Phil Pembroke and Pat Stroud the ball was continually recycled. Runs from the Centre's Paul Buchanan and Neil brought the visitors up to the London line and following another successful scrum, Mullen went over for a well worked try. Perry Reeves narrowly missed with the conversion. This score seemed to spur the home team back into action and following some fine attacking play in midfield the fly half went over for another try next to the posts. Successful conversion With the conversion being successful the score at half time was 14-5. The second-half began much as the first had finished with East London creating more opportunities. Despite some great defensive work the home team extended their lead going over for two further tries in the first ten minutes ot the half, one of these being converted. This brought the Old Boys back to life again and for the remainder of the game they put the home team under pressure. Good rucking from the pack, notably Charlie Raymond, brought the visitors up to the East London try line and had they not squandered two penalty chances midway through, the half would have certainly made the final score of 26-5 look more respectable and reflective of the overall possession and commitment shown by both sides in the match. |
