Match Report

Date - 4th November 2000 Old Brentwoods 1st XV -v- Cuffley
Tetley Bitter Vase 3rd round.
Old Brentwoods won! 39 - 27

Despite starting badly yet again the Old Boy's put their poor recent league form behind them to produce their best performance of the year & register a hard fought, well earned victory.

The old boy's were put on the back foot from the kick off & went behind to a well worked try by the home team that was poorly defended by brentwood. The resulting kick was missed & from the restart the visitors soon began to make inroads, taking advantage of some indiscipline from their opponents. The ever dependable laurie cutmore showed his team mate how much they have missed him as he slotted over 4 penalties from all parts of the opposition half to give the old boy's a 12-5 lead.

Far from being overawed Cuffley responded with another unconverted try. Reducing the deficit by 5 points.

The old boys pack worked well as a unit in loose play throughout the game Scott Inglis, Mick Laws & Steve Aim all working tirelessly to create ball for the backs.

An opportunist try from Alex Hughes, the winger intercepting a opposition pass gave the old boys more breathing space though this score was quickly equaled by Cuffley moments later their winger going over for an unconverted try.

The highlight of the first half came just before the break as Paul Clancy called a short line-out 10 metres from the Cuffley line. The throw went to front man Peter Womersley who powered over for a fine try. With Cutmore adding the extra 2 points the old boy's claimed a hard fought 24-15 lead at half time.

The second half began with cutmore slotting over another penalty to further increase the visitors lead & with both teams scoring tries soon afterwards, the latter coming from a powerful run by James Holmes.

With the game very evenly balanced indiscipline began to creep into match with both Pat Stroud & Alex Hughes being sin-binned for the visitors & 3 cuffley played being punished in the same way. The reduced numbers meant that the remaining players had to contest that much harder & great defective work from Chris Reah, Paul Buchanan & Phil Pembroke amongst others helped the visitors to hang onto their lead.

Their efforts were rewarded with a fine try from Womersley late on in the Half, the ball passing through the hands of Alastair Rigden, Doug cutmore & Neil Hannaway before the prop was rewarded for his support play with his second try of the game. Cutmore went on to miss his easiest kick of the day but by then the damage had been done.

Despite a push over try from Cuffley the points were not enough to affect the result & the Old Boy's were left to thank their much improved team efforts & spirit to capture a 39-27 victory & progress to the next round.
