Done the double
Old Brentwoods won! 27 - 8
The Old Boy's finished the year 2000 in fine form with a convincing 27-8 victory against fellow league strugglers Cooperians.

Both sides showed promise early on but early scrums suggested that the Old Boy's may have the advantage up front. This proved to be the case throughout the game & helped produce the first try after 10 minutes. A scrum on the visitors 22 meter line was won by the Old Boy's, taken up by Alistair Rigden who got the ball out to Chris Reah. The powerful center decided to go the direct route to the line, trampling over the meager defense to score close to the posts. Laurie Cutmore was unsuccessful with the kick & had to watch his next effort drift past the post 10 minutes later as the home team extended their lead to 10-0, a quick penalty going out to Alex Hughes who passed to Neil Hannaway, the winger scoring in the left corner.

The scoreline remained unchanged up to half time despite the visitors having several chances to reduce the deficit, missing 2 penalties & generally unsettling the Old Boy's rhythm.

The second half saw the home team attempt to push home their advantage but it was Coopers that scored first with a penalty 5 minutes into the half.

The front row of Steve Aim, Phil Pembroke & Pete Womersley worked tirelessly throughout the game to forge openings for the backs & as the game progressed the Old Boy's back row began to make their presence felt too. Paul Buchanan, returning to the side after his trans-atlantic sabbatical, began to make inroads & with Jason Lee supporting well the home team found themselves a few metres from the Coopers line. With Mike Haddock & Pat Stroud pushing well at the back of the scrum the ball was won against the head & the resulting pass along the line to James Holmes gave the centre the chance of a try, one that he duly accepted. Cutmore made no mistake with the conversion.

Rather than push home their advantage the Old Boy's succumbed to their old ways & let the visitors in for a soft try immediately after the restart.

This score however did force the home team into a far more attacking display to finish the game & with the Old Boy's pack driving the visitors further into their half Holmes was gifted another try . The conversion was successful & proved to be the last score of the game.

This win will give the Old Boy's great heart for the New Year & should prove the catalyst for further league success.
