| Old Brentwoods won 43 - 3 | |
| A rather lack-lustre first half performance was fully rectified in the second half as the old boys finally produced some convincing play to defeat their visitors 43-3.
The first half saw a catalogue of errors from both sides, neither team sustaining any good play for any length of time. The old boys pack did prove dominant in the scrums & lineouts with Ed Gooday excelling in both & from a good drive up field the forwards were able to set up Alistair Rigden for an opportunist try after 15 minutes. Following the restart it was Canvey's turn to put pressure on their opponents & with a successful penalty they reduced the deficit to 2 points. Some scrappy play in mid field towards the end of the half led to a player from both teams being sin binned. This seemed to immediately spur the home team on & soon afterwards Andrew Born went over for a try from a 5 yard scrum to push the score up to 10-3 at half-time. The coaches half time team talk confirmed that the poor performance had been noticed from the side lines. The second half started more positively & ended in a flourish with the home team getting their act together in all aspects. The drive from the pack in set play was transferred to loose play too with Pat Stroud, Peter Womersley & Mike Ashby among others making early inroads. Not long after the restart a well contested ruck from woods gave the backs room to expand the play & from second phase ball Phil Pembroke went over for a try, converted by Alex Hughes. Minutes later it was Goodays turn to shine as he scythed through the Canvey defenses to score an excellent try from a run that started from the half way line. The remainder of the game saw the home team push home their advantage & tries from Neil Hannaway, Chris Reah & a second for Born, all converted by Hughes, gave the old boys a convincing victory in the end by 43-3. | |
