Saturdays game turned into Headley Water pupils versus Headley Water teachers, as The Old Boys side was bolstered by students from the local school. An excellent display of running Rugby from the Old Boys produced some of the most free flowing passages of play ever seen at Ashwells road. Excellent platforms provided by the tight five of Steve Gorrod, Mickey Bristow, Adrian Kenny, Stu Chisholm and Scott Inglis, ensured clean ball for Hugh Godfrey to release the Old Brentwoods three quarters. Using the width of the park, Chris Hague, Perry Reeves and John Mole, carved holes in the Billericay defence, to release wingers Sam Godfrey and Rob Clapton, to score well worked tries in both corners. Good support work from the back row of Paddy Bache, Billy Mullen and Michael Ashby produced second and third phase ball, from which the Old boys attack proved unrelenting. Billericay to their credit produced some good defensive work, but constant overlaps from the home side were all converted into points. Ian Hannaway was safe under the high ball playing at full back, and was able to clear up any loose ball that Billericays attacks could provide. With the visiting teams blind side flanker Roger Davis, constantly giving away penalties for being off side, and raw recruit Simon Martin struggling at outside centre, the Old boys were able to secure a good win against their local rivals. It has taken much of the season for the Old Boys to turn pressure exerted into points, and this is due to individuals playing so well as a team, that everyone knows that they will be well supported. With Perry Reeves kicking nine out of eleven conversions, and Billy Mullen scoring a drop goal (the first in 2nd XV history), the Old Boys were able to secure another big scoring win. This game ensured, that the new shirts, provided by Scruffy Murphys remain unbeaten, and with growing confidence the Old Boys can look forward to playing Thames II's away next weekend. |
